The Community Paper

Downtown Student Life volunteers at Coalition for the Homeless

On April 6, the Downtown Student Life community engagement coordinator, J’lin Rose, led a group of volunteers at the Coalition for the Homeless. The Coalition is located at 639 W. Central Blvd., next door to the Creative Village campus.

Ashley Spry is a coordinator of student engagement and advisor in Valencia and UCF’s DSL office. “From their need during the pandemic, to the proximity for our students to attend, this was a great opportunity for our team and students to participate in,” Spry wrote, referring to the Coalition for the Homeless.

“We always want to expose our students to where they can complete service in the area, along with us or on their own. The goal is to provide ways for students to get involved and become a part of the Downtown and Parramore area,” Spry said.

According to the Office of Student Involvement, “DSL functions as a student run board that serves as a conduit for students to participate in co-curricular activities, campus advocacy, community engagement, and social justice on the UCF Downtown & Valencia College Downtown campus” ( OSI.UCF.edu/downtownstudentengagement).

Spry says they plan to continually work with and within the surrounding Callahan, Parramore and Downtown communities. Their next collaboration will be in May with the City of Orlando’s Keep Orlando Beautiful division for a cleanup in the Parramore area.
